A new barrel is created from white oak. This is because the wood needs to be free of knots and defects in order to ensure a watertight seal. A typical oak wine barrel can only be used in wine production for about five years. After the barrel is exhausted of its wood flavor it still has the structural integrity and strength to last 100 years.

The wine barrel is carefully taken apart and the staves are sorted. Each stave is selected for its role in a piece of furniture. Then they are shaped, sanded and sealed. When a wine barrel is converted into furniture the barrels history is preserved and can enjoyed for generations.
